It isn’t a game, but I made this interesting looking thing, a sort of moving fractal. I know my Grandpa would have thought it was cool because he loved math and fractals where one of the things that drew him to computers. The fractals he made didn’t move, but he did use color animation to give it the feeling of moving, but this kind of movement would is like a whole new world.
We often hear of Posttraumatic stress disorder or PTSD, especially associated with combat veterans and difficulties they face returning home, but did you know there is a positive version of PTSD called Posttraumatic Growth? Game designer Jane McGonigal and author of Reality Is Broken: Why Games Make us Better and How they Can Change the World found herself in a troubling situation. After a sever injury to her head, she began having suicidal thoughts! Her solution was to gamify her recovery! The game is called SuperBetter!

This was my best GDC yet. I had some great business cards, my resume and something to talk about: founding and running the Washington DC Area Unity3D Users’ Group. I had a wonderful time, did the most networking of my life and came home very inspired! I even got to meet and chat with Matthew Davis one of the creators of FTL. (WHAT! You haven’t played FTL!! GO BUY IT NOW!!! )
One, bit of fun that happen was Cart Life won the IGF Nuovo award. Cart Life’s creator Richard Hofmeier decided to deface the award sign and hand the booth over to howling dogs by Propentine.
On the last day of the trip, I decided to go to the Dutch Game Garden at their consult. I met of Maarten Wiedenh of Reus which he is playing in the picture above. It’s a cool game about Gods and planet building, its worth getting. On the way, a monk approached me and gave me the “Work Smoothly” medal pictured above. It struck me as smart way to think about working , “Work Smoothly.” It’s become a sort of motto now, whenever I get harried or out of sorts I remind myself to get collected and work smoothly.

There is game called Small Worlds by David Shute I want take a moment to highlight. I played it back in 2009, and it won CGDC #6. I can’t tell you how many times this game has entered my thoughts during brainstorming sessions. Here are several reason I can identify why this game has stuck in my mind. First, its beautiful art. The fact that it is pixel art adds to my amazement. It seems within grasp of my art ability, but I doubt it, all great art seems easy. Second, the game is compelling, you want to know the story behind the world and your character. The story moves forwards because of the scenery, not because of what anyone says. The visuals hint at what has happen and propels you forward, you must know. Third, the music (by Kevin MacLeod) is wonderful. It adds the perfect atmosphere which induces this compelling feeling of wonder and amazement.
I added The Last Sleeper to my list of Kickstart projects today. I really think the music by Erik Aadahl is well done. The latest update has a nice track, you should take a listen I’m also intrigued by the story of the game, and it sounds like the game designer has face some serious adversity getting the project this far. Add your support, only a few hours left!
